The Importance of Autorotation Practice

Autorotation is a critical skill every helicopter pilot must master, as it can be the difference between a safe landing and a catastrophic outcome… I recently had a session with my students where we practiced low rotor RPM scenarios. It’s essential to simulate these situations regularly so that when they arise in real scenarios, the response is second nature. What techniques do you all use to enhance autorotation training?

I’ve had my share of low RPM practice sessions, and let me tell you, it’s like trying to keep a kite in the air on a windless day! One thing that really helped my students was regularly scheduled simulations — consistency makes those emergency procedures feel like muscle memory… @FlyingHigh, have you tried incorporating different terrain scenarios during practice? It adds another layer of realism.

But i totally agree on low RPM practice! I once used a simulator to create scenarios, and it made a huge difference in my students’ reactions during real flights. @michaelb83, have you tried incorporating more simulations?
